Make Your Own Baby Food

I make my own organic baby food and regularly get questions from interested Moms. I thought I'd share some information on how I got started and how you can too.

Have you ever tried store bought baby food? I have and it's pretty bad. Bananas...well, let's just say they don't taste like any banana I've ever eaten. I don't like the taste of store bought baby food and can't expect my kids to either.

Making your own baby food is easier than you think, much tastier and more economical. During those early years your kids taste buds are developing. Don't you want them to grow up loving Mom's home cooked meals instead of convenience foods? You're kids will love you for it!

A friend of mine gave me a copy of Super Baby Food and I absolutely love it. (Thanks Emily!) I highly recommend Super Baby Food to anyone who's ever considered making their own food. It's packed full of great information including feeding, preparation, food storage and recipes.

One meal, when can be eaten daily, is super porridge. It contains whole grains, legumes, healthy fats, super vegetables and vitamins/minerals. You can easily vary one or more ingredients while keeping the dietary benefits and changing the taste from one day to the next.

Amazon.com has the Super Baby Food book for only $13.57 (32% savings).

It also qualifies for FREE Super Saver Shipping when you spend over $25.

Keep Fruits and Vegetables Fresh Longer

The produce co-op that I talked about here comes with a lot of fruits and vegetables. It's approximately 2 laundry baskets worth.

If you have a smaller family or don't go through a bunch of produce quickly it is possible to keep your produce fresh for two weeks (sometimes longer). We use the Debbie Meyer green bags for all our produce. In the past, we used to waste money regularly because produce would spoil before we had a chance to eat it all. Since we've started using the Debbie Meyer bags I rarely throw away produce anymore.

The only thing I'd like to call out is read the materials that come with the bags. When you put produce in the bags you need to ensure it's dry. If you notice moisture collecting you should wipe down the inside of the bag, otherwise the produce will actually spoil faster.

You can get a box of 20 bags (10 large, 10 small) for only $0.99 + $4.99 shipping. Details can be found here. Even with $5 shipping it's still a savings of 40% since these retail for $9.99.

As an aside, I've never been a fan of 'As Seen on TV Products'. However these Debbie Myer green bags really do work!
